Middle Grade Author Micki Bare on Needing Distractions from Writing

I’m very happy to have children’s author Micki Bare on the blog to talk about the writing life and her latest release, the middle grade novel SOCIETY OF THE SENTINELIA. Welcome, Micki!

What do fairy tea, gardening, and closet karaoke have in common?

Let’s start with the fairy tea. I recently discovered it in a boutique shop a few blocks from my house. It smells amazing and is quite soothing after a long day of work on top of author obligations. It’s whimsical, yet practical. It occupies all my senses as I sip.

Next we have gardening. My hubby built a new raised bed this year. The tomato plants are heavy with green fruit. The cucumber and pepper plants I grew from seeds tossed in the soil are huge and healthy. The grapevine I planted last year has dozens of clusters bursting forth. The plants require almost daily attention, pulling me outside into weather of all sorts.

Then there’s closet karaoke. That’s when I crank up the music on our Echo Show (it displays lyrics) and I belt out my favorite tunes along with the artist. I do this when no one is home. When I’m writing, editing, or working, I have the music on in the background. But when a song jolts me into the present with a blast from my past, I have to get up and sing. I stand, I stretch, and I forget everything except the lyrics as scenes from the 30-something-year-old music video flash through my memory.

If you haven’t figured it out yet, fairy tea, gardening, and closet karaoke are distractions. And while distractions often get a bad rap, they also have a glass-half-full side. Distractions can reignite creativity. They can ease the messy, uncomfortable aspects of life. Distractions can also help an author who is on the precipice of a book release maintain their sanity.

Writing a book is a huge accomplishment. If you also want your work “out there,” being an author includes the publishing process and marketing. Many authors, like me, also work full time. When I signed the contract for my Zahra of the Uwharries middle grade series in August 2021, I essentially took on a second full time job.

When you write, edit, and market before work, then write, edit, and market after work, and then write, edit, and market on weekends and holidays to make your dream a reality, you can burn out. You can become a little batty. You can run out of every ounce of steam. That’s why you need distractions.

My closet karaoke habit, which I developed as a tween with my boom box and my version of lyrics, gives me an extra boost of energy. It also cranks up feel-good hormones, which help authors overcome imposter syndrome.

My thumb wasn’t always green, but I enjoy being out in the dirt so much that I’ve gotten better over time. The smell of dirt, vegetable plants, and herbs always makes me feel better. That feeling of accomplishment when I pick herbs for Friday pizza or harvest tomatoes and squash for summer recipes fills me with hope, inspiration, and resolve to make healthy choices.

Discovering the fairy tea a week before the release of the first book, Society of the Sentinelia, was serendipity. I’m going from the moment I wake up until I try to sleep at night. The tea pulls me away from the chaos without pesky ‘I’m wasting time I need to be doing something’ guilt tied to it. Technically, because it’s called fairy tea, I’m researching a product I can use in my marketing or networking endeavors. For example, I may bring some to the session I’m presenting at the SCBWI-Carolina’s fall 2022 conference and give it away as a door prize. Or maybe I’ll send fairy tea to my editor as a thank you.

You don’t have to be a crazy busy writer to need distractions in your life. We’re all busy and we all need the oasis of a rejuvenating break now and again. Reading is another great distraction. For tweens (and adults, too), I humbly recommend Society of the Sentinelia. And while you’re busy reading, discussing, and recommending it, I’ll be knee-deep into book 2, THE BLIND FAIRY, due out May 2023.

SOCIETY OF THE SENTINELIA blurb:

Zahra, a sprite-like tween no bigger than a loblolly pinecone, befriends an 11- year-old human on a quest to find her parents and sister. When a neighbor muddles their plans, kidnaps Zahra, and threatens her new friend, Zahra discovers unnerving truths about herself and her family.

Set in the Birkhead Wilderness of the Uwharrie Mountains in central North Carolina, Society of the Sentinelia is the first book in the Zahra of the Uwharries series that chronicles Zahra’s unique and critical role in saving her species.

Deal Alert: November Discount on Katie L. Carroll’s Books

Remember how back in the beginning of the pandemic there was a shortage of toilet paper and since then there have been various shortages of certain items? That’s happening now with physical books.

The supply chain issues regarding books can’t totally be blamed on the pandemic (this problem has been years in the making, see “Looking for Answers to Supply Chain Challenges” by Michael Seidlinger), but the bottom line is there is a shortage of physical books.

While publishers are pushing back release dates and paper is in short supply, you don’t have to worry because I have all of my books in stock. For the entire month of November, you can get signed copies of my books at a 10% discount when you use code NOVEMBER10 at checkout on the Purchase Books page.

Signed and personalized books make for great gifts, and I have choices for all the young readers in your life! My picture book THE BEDTIME KNIGHT is a fun read aloud where young kiddos can participate by seeing what is revealed in the illustrations. For the 8-12 crowd, PIRATE ISLAND has pirate treasure and a cursed island (and a little real history thrown in there for good measure). My YA fantasies, the award-winning ELIXIR BOUND and ELIXIR SAVED, are perfect for teens or fantasy loving adults.

This discount is running through the end of November so I can make sure to get them all mailed off in time for the December holidays. All orders come with a bonus bookmark or sticker, customized to the book(s) you’re ordering. Buying direct from me also means that you’re supporting a small business!

Summer Writing Update: Elixirs, Witches, and Pirates!

The kids have been out of school for a week and summer break is in full swing here! We’ve made out lists of activities we’d like to do and places we’d like to go this summer. Some we’ve already done or have planned (like going to the zoo and strawberry picking), while others are probably not going to happen this year (like visit NASCAR’s Hall of Fame).

As for my writing, I’ve got a couple of things going on. I’m working on getting my YA fantasy Elixir Bound with the new cover back up for sale. Right now you can get the ebook of Elixir Bound from Amazon and that’s it. I’ll post when I get it up in paperback and on ebook for the other vendors. Plus, I finally created a book trailer for it, which was a lot of fun. It was nice to work a different set of creative muscles for it. (The map it features is part of the map of the Great Peninsula, which can be seen in full in the new version of Elixir Bound.)

I’ve been on something of a roll with drafting the companion novel Elixir Saved. I’ve been drafting this novel for years…yes, I said years! So long, in fact, that I’ve been calling it my perpetual WIP (work-in-progress). But I think I’m finally crested the murky middle section and can see the far side of the hill. I’m hoping to keep that momentum going over the summer and get it ready for beta readers before the end of the year. I’d like to publish this one some time next year (fingers crossed!).

Research for my next middle grade book has been going well. I’ve been doing a bunch of reading about the witch trials that took place in Connecticut (mostly before the more famous Salem Witch Trials) and what colonial Connecticut was like. I checked out a local history book from the library and mentioned it to my dad because he’s a history nerd. He was like, “Is that the book where I helped write and edit the updated history in the 1980s?” Turns out it was! And my grandfather, who was there when I mentioned it to my dad, was like, “My father, your great-grandfather, helped with the version that was written in the 1930s.” So that was an interesting serendipitous moment.

The witchy middle grade book–which in my mind is pitched as Mean Girls meets The Crucible–doesn’t take place in history, but it will be a contemporary middle grade that delves into history and ties it to the present, much like Pirate Island does with Captain Kidd’s history being woven into Billy’s story in the present day. I hope to start drafting this story soon, but I need to focus on Elixir for now.

Speaking of Pirate Island, the ebook is on sale for $1.99 for a limited time, so scoop that up if you haven’t already (links for Pirate Island on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Kobo). I’ve also got an exciting announcement coming up for Pirate Island once my local library makes it public…just to give you a little teaser there. 😉

And I always have stuff I’m waiting to hear back about, so there’s always the potential for good news (or devastating rejections!). Thus is the nature of the publishing biz.

Anyway, I’m excited for the summer weather and hanging out with the boys and family day trips. And a certain writer/mama’s birthday is coming a few days before a certain gentleman’s first birthday. Oh, and I’ll be going to the big SCBWI conference in L.A. this summer. I’m so excited (I won the trip, so the airfare, hotel, and conference fee were paid for!), but super nervous about leaving the baby. I keep telling myself it’ll be fine. Busy times, busy times.

What are your summer plans?

Meet Kira from A TOWN BEWITCHED by Suzanne de Montigny

I have a very special guest on the Observation Desk today: Kira, from Suzanne de Montigny’s latest middle grade novel A TOWN BEWITCHED. Let’s all give Kira a big welcome!

A Town BewitchedHi. My name’s Kira. I’m fourteen and I have a frightful tale to tell about the strangest woman I’ve ever met. She showed up at Dad’s funeral wearing a scarf and boots even though it was August and carrying an old beat-up violin case. No one knows who she is in our small town and that’s weird ‘cause I’m a violinist and we know everyone who plays since it’s such a nerdy thing to do. Speaking of nerdy, did I mention I’m a child prodigy in classical violin? Makes it tough to fit in. My BFF Charlotte is a misfit too. She was adopted from China and is the only Asian kid in town. The In-Girls and their creepy friend Travis have a hey day with us.

Anyway, so this Kate McDonough whose eyes are the same piercing blue as a wild animal, takes over the town. Within a few days, Uncle Jack’s tavern is filled every night listening to her play this mysterious Celtic music. Then everyone starts taking fiddling and step dancing lessons, even the In-Girls and their nasty friend Travis. Like what’s going on? Why does Kate McDonough have this effect on a rock-n-roll town?

Then someone starts vandalizing the town leaving scary messages and a dead bird as a calling card. The authorities notice human teeth marks in a piece of organ left behind. I know who it is – it’s Kate McDonough! It has to be because it all started when she came to town, yet no one else can see it. They’re all under her spell. But not me. I’m going to get to the bottom of this before something really bad happens…

A Town Bewitched – now available on Amazon.
