There are certain movies that when I’m flipping through the channels and happen upon them, I just have to watch (at least for a few minutes). They’re not in any certain genre; some of them are award winners; others of them are, well, not. I’m not an old-movie buff, so they’re all from my lifetime.
Some of them are just good movies. You know the kind, the ones that make you feel something deep in your soul. Others remind me of a certain time in my life, a movie time capsule of sorts. They make me laugh or cry, or both! I like to call them my personal classics. Here they are in no particular order:
- The Shawshank Redemption
- Clueless
- The Lord of the Rings trilogy
- The Little Mermaid
- You’ve Got Mail
- The Matrix (only the first one!)
- Dazed and Confused
- A Few Good Men
- The Harry Potter movies (even though the books are so much better!)
- Aladdin
- Billy Madison
- American Beauty
- The Hunger Games movies (see above about the books being better!)
- Superbad
- The Princess Bride
- Bring It On

My rewatch movies are usually romances. Phantom of the Opera (Gerard Butler version), PS I Love You (I promise it isn’t a Gerard Butler thing, just a coincidence), Truly Madly Deeply, Love Actually, Notting Hill – okay I could go on forever. Le sigh.
Not too many romances on my list. I wonder what that says about me… 🙂
Great list of movies. I’ve seen most of them, a few are new to me.
When I watch movies, which isn’t very often, I like the oldies. Westerns (John Wayne), historical, Gone With the Wind, Rebel Without a Cause, Natalie Wood movies, Lord of the Rings.

I haven’t seen all on your “must-watch”– but agree with the ones I did see.
My father told me long ago that when we think of plot, theme, dialogue etc.– these building blocks still don’t tell of that elusive thing, called “heart.” It’s that connection that these stories all have. I care about the characters and must see them through.
Yes, without the heart of the story, nothing else matters. I think that’s the key to a good book to movie adaptation: keeping the heart of the story intact.
You’ve listed some of my favorite ones. I might add Last of the Mohicans and My Left Foot just because I’m a Daniel Day Lewis fan.

I also like all the ones everyone else has already named. John Wayne and Elvis Presley, Doris Day, Danny Kaye, Gene Kelly, like a lot of old ones too.

Thanks! Your post made me realize I totally should have included the Bourne movies on my list (probably not the fourth one–no Matt Damon–but there is the new one coming out soon with him in it). And I was flicking through the channels tonight and came across Gladiator, which should have been the list as well. So many movies!
