Trailer Reveal for THE DARKNESS WITHIN by Kelly Hashway

Kelly Hashway (another one of those darned prolific author friends of mine šŸ˜‰ ) joins us today with the trailer for her YA paranormal THE DARKNESS WITHIN. I loved the first book THE MONSTER WITHIN in this series (see my 5-star Goodreads review here) and am very much looking forward to Darkness. Welcome, Kelly!

23420876The Darkness Within blurb:

After dying of cancer at seventeen and being brought back to life by an evil witch who turned her into a monster, Samantha Thompson thinks she’s finally gotten past all the tragedy in her life. Now she’s part of a coven of good witches who are helping her and her boyfriend, Ethan Anderson, learn to use the powers they received from other witches. Aside from the fact that Sam and Ethan are still in hiding from their old lives–the ones they had before Sam was brought back to life–things couldn’t be better. Sam and Ethan are inseparable. What could go wrong?

Magic.

Ethan’s magic came from a witch who’d turned as evil as possible, and though his coven thought he’d be fine, the more he uses his magic, the stranger he starts acting. The magic inside him is changing who he is. One minute he’s Sam’s sweet, perfect Ethan and the next, he’s a complete stranger. Even with all her witchy power, Sam is helpless against the magic corrupting Ethan. Can Sam find out what’s wrong with him before she loses him to dark magic forever?

15839932The Monster Within blurb:

The moment seventeen-year-old Samantha Thompson crawls out of her grave, her second chance at life begins. She died of cancer with her long-time boyfriend, Ethan, by her sideā€”a completely unfair shot at life. But Ethan found a way to bring her back, like he promised he would. Only Sam came back wrong.

She’s now a monster that drains others’ lives to survive. And after she kills, sheā€™s tortured by visionsā€”glimpses into her victims would-have-been futures had she not killed them. Barely able to live with herself and trying to make things right, Sam ends up a pawn in a vicious game of payback within the local coven of witches.

But when the game reveals what Ethan had to do to save Sam, she must make a choice that will change all their lives forever.

Interview & Giveaway with Kelly Hashway Author of CURSE OF THE GRANVILLE FORTUNE

Happy Halloween! Today a quick interview and a giveaway with Kelly Hashway as she celebrates the release of her MG mystery CURSE OF THE GRANVILLE FORTUNE. Pretty much anything Kelly writes (including her works under her pen name Ashelyn Drake) is an automatic add to my TBR pile. Welcome, Kelly!Ā

What made you want to become a writer?

Iā€™ve loved books since before I could read. I still remember the first time I read a book on my own and how powerful it made me feel. From that moment on I knew I not only wanted to read books but wanted to write them, too.

What was the hardest part of writing CURSE OF THE GRANVILLE FORTURNE? And on the flip side what was the easiest?

When I started this book I couldnā€™t get the first chapter right. I actually had to write the ending first and then backtrack. So oddly enough the climax and the ending were the easy parts. Once I had those in place, I was able to tackle the start of the story and work my way to the middle. It was definitely a different process than what Iā€™m used to.

What other books are like CURSE OF THE GRANVILLE FORTUNE that readers might enjoy?

Chasing Vermeer by Blue Balliett

A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket

The Spiderwick Chronicles by Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black

Growing up, what books have had the most influence on you?

I grew up reading R.L. Steinā€™s Fear Street books. I loved them. They were scary, suspenseful, and fast paced. I devoured that series.

If you were stranded on a desert island and could only bring two books and one movie, what would you bring?

Percy Jackson and the Titanā€™s Curse by Rick Riordan, Crescendo by Becca Fitzpatrick, and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

Whatā€™s up next for you and your writing?

Well, there are more books in the Curse of the Granville Fortune series, plus I have a bunch of YA titles coming out over the next few years. And of course, Iā€™m writing new titles too.

And finally can you share something funny/weird/exceptional about yourself that you donā€™t normally talk about in an interview?

I have a weird phobia of the number three. I think thatā€™s why I use it so much in my books. It just freaks me out, and I associate it with bad luck. No idea why though. Itā€™s strange.

Granville-Fortune-coverCURSE OF THE GRANVILLE FORTUNE blurb:

Find the fortune, break the curse!

The hunt is on for an ancient treasure tied to nine-year-old J.B.ā€™s family history. Heā€™s been having visions that make him sweaty, lightheaded, and certain heā€™s turning into some kind of freakā€”or worse, going insane. But things are worse than he imagined. The visions stem from a family curse. An ancient ancestor was accused of stealing the massive Granville fortune, and now J.B.ā€™s entirely family will suffer.

To break the curse, J.B. must find and return the Granvilleā€™s stolen property. But heā€™s not the only one searching for the treasure. As he sets out on his journey through a dark and foreboding forest, heā€™ll battle his worst fears and fight terrifying creatures along the way. And when he meets two others who share the missing pieces of his visions and suffer from the same curse, the three soon realize they need to work together to break the curse before itā€™s too late.

The car stopped, and Ethanā€™s hand slipped from mine. I turned to him, blinking against the fluorescent lights of the gas station.Ā
ā€œSorry,ā€ he said. ā€œI didnā€™t mean to wake you. I just needed to get some gas and a few things from the convenience store. Thereā€™s no food at the cottage. I thought Iā€™d grab some crackers and soda. Stuff like that. Iā€™ll even see if they have black licorice for you. I know you love it.ā€Ā
I nodded and started for my seat belt.Ā
ā€œNo. You stay.ā€ Ethan opened his door and stepped outside. I let my hair fall across my shoulders, trying to warm myself against the night air. ā€œIā€™ll be right back.ā€Ā
The trunk opened, and a moment later, Ethan opened my door, handing me one of his sweatshirts. ā€œHere, you look cold.ā€Ā
I smiled. ā€œThanks.ā€ He knew me so well. I watched him walk inside the store and heard the soft click of the car locking again. He wasnā€™t taking any chances with me. I knew heā€™d protect me from anything. Heā€™d already protected me from death. He was my every- thing now. I would never see my family or friends again. I had to start over. The thought terrified me, but at least I had Ethan by my side.Ā
I hugged the sweatshirt to my body. I was too tired to actually put it on, and, this way I could breathe in Ethanā€™s scent while I kept warm. I inhaled deeply at first, and then my breaths became shallow, which was weird considering how tired I felt. I yawned. Exhaustion overwhelmed me. Apparently it took a lot of energy to return from the dead.Ā
I leaned my head on the window, hoping the cool glass would keep me awake, but my head spun, making me dizzy. My arms and legs tingled with the sensation of pins and needles. I felt like I had a million spiders crawling all over me. I threw the sweatshirt off me and onto the floor. My arms were bare. No spiders. But the feeling didnā€™t go away. I panicked. The walls of the car were caving in on me. The air around me was tight, strangling me.Ā
I searched the convenience store windows for Ethan, but all I saw was a guy in a cowboy hat, and a woman taking her little boy to the bathroom. Where was Ethan? The lightheadedness was getting worseā€”more intense. My breathing was labored. In a panic, I reached for the door handle. It took me a moment to remember it was locked, but when I finally got it open, I stumbled out of the car into the fresh air. I gulped oxygen into my lungs, hoping it would make me feel better, but it didnā€™t.Ā
I was suffocating. Life was draining out of me. I collapsed to my knees, skinning them against the pavement. Wheezing, I crawled forward, trying to reach the convenience store door. Trying to reach Ethan. I needed help. I didnā€™t know what was happening to me, but it felt like I was dying…again.Ā
